Abalone Incense Burner

These unique incense burners are created to be a special part of your quiet times in the day. Here is how they came to be.

This abalone shell is molded from one found on a beach at Mallacoota, before the unprecedented fires of 2020. Our family had gathered for a milestone birthday, it was still a time of freedom. It was impossible to conceive the devastation that lay ahead. At least it was for me.

On the day after the party, a day before the fire we prepared the home. looked after the children and went to the beach. The heart was stifling but still welcome. As we walked down the familiar track, I was surprised when a notoriously shy lyre bird ran across in front of me. My friend and I looked at each-other speechless.

We all know what happened down the East coast at that changing of the decade. Millions of fauna perished, mile after mile of flora burnt to the ground. Homes lost. Communities left, stripped bare.

This simple, beautiful abalone shell reminds us of the enduring beauty of nature - resilient, boundless and true. Through ceramics, one of the oldest traditional craft practises known to humanity, we can burn some incense in it’s gentle form and ponder on the wonders of our world and how we can care for it…
